My Theory on the "Pass the Torch Showcase #2"

Torch
In the last year I have been to numerous talent showcases and since I try to avoid negativity at all costs - I would rather just not mention it. You know - if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Yesterday was my first showcase in NYC and I must say, I was very impressed.

Last night at the Retreat Lounge on West 17th Street in New York City, the second "Pass the Torch" showcase went down. Contestants entered to win a variety of prizes including a music video, a photo shoot, two hours of recording time at EQ studios, and A&R meeting with Maybach/Def Jam, song placements, and two beats from well know producers.

The contestants were judged on originality, stage presence, creativity and character as well as a "distinctive flow," according to Buda da future one of the three judges. Ron Stewart of Interscope and Geter - K, Vice President of Maybach/Def Jam were also on the judging team. I felt very VIP sitting at the judges table, like an honorary member of Specialyst Entertainment.

Here's My Theory on each of the contestants:

Solo Mob
Solo Mob - came all the way from Chi-Town to participate. They gave off good energy. I am glad they went first. They set the tone for a 90% positive show, you already know there's always that one person that just drank way too much.

Georgia Cee
Georgia Cee - I did not know what to expect when she took the stage. But when this little Italian woman began belting out her songs with soul, she won me over as a fan. This is probably sexist if a woman can be sexist - but didn't she have the best boobs of the night? (pause, no homo. *Riley voice*)

Big Phella
Big Phella - I liked how he started his set with a freestyle. He had a professional sound. I actually marked him as my favorite to win.

Ramo
Ramo - Had his little Diddy Bop going on. I thought it was a brave move to rap directly to the judges. I was really impressed by his song "Introduction."

Mackin Millionz

MackinMillions - I REALLY like his song "Rise to the top." Would love to see his performance after he gets a few shows under his belt.

Before I tell you who won the contest, can I please just say that I will never understand why you need to bring 50 dudes on stage with you who aren't even hyping up your performance. When they are just standing there they are not only distracting the audience, but also bringing down your energy - but hell, That's My Theory.®

Drum roll please . . . . . . in second place - Georgia Cee. Coming in with the grand prize for the evening, oh I knew it, I knew it!!! Congratulations are in order for Big Phella.

  1. So you are telling me that these Chicago dudes went to NYC to compete in a NYC showcase? And on top of that they were drunk? Or at least one of them like you say? Which one LOL? How did they expect to win with a NYC crowd? LOL!

  2. NOOOOOO. They weren't drunk. Someone in the crowd was drunk and tried to start a fight near the end of the show. I might need to rephrase that sentence.
