This past Saturday, I woke up at 2 a.m. to handle something that has been plaguing me for years - an immense fear of heights. My Partner in crime (P.I.C. for future reference) and I decided to cross the Williamsburg Bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan.
Now, you may be wondering why someone who is afraid of heights, bridges, and being suspended over water would do something so ridiculous as walk across this 1.2 mile bridge - the answer is simple. I wanted to conquer my fear.
You see reader, I decided to look my fear in the face and laugh at it. I realized that if I could for one moment overcome my fear, that I would be able to accomplish anything. After all, most of the time we do not go after our goals and dreams is because we are hoping to avoid our biggest fear of all - FAILURE.
So, my Theory on the situation is this: If i can get over one of my greatest fears, I will be unstoppable. If I can look my fear of plunging to my death from a bridge, then I can easily face the fear or failure or rejection - I mean after all, the residual effects of them both are far less than death. Ultimately, even if you are stuck with dealing with failure or rejection - there will be a valuable life lesson in it.
I do not think I could have done it with out my P.I.C. who gave me solid encouragement and lots of laughter. We even got a Chinese aerobic lesson in Chinatown, LMAO! (insider)
I hope this helps someone. Up next - the Brooklyn Bridge, I think it is higher.
After that? Sky diving. Who's down to go with me?
